SAHARIYA TRIBE

The word Sahariya is derived from the word-Sah-hariya, which means to be accompanied by a lion.

The word Sahar in the Persian language means forest and this tribe lives in the forests. That's why they are called Sahariya.

The Sahariya tribe is the fifth largest tribe of Madhya Pradesh in terms of population. Which mainly resides in the districts of Gwalior, Shivpuri, Morena, Guna etc.

This is a special backward tribe of the state.

The museum of Sahariya tribe is located in Sheopur district.

Socio-Cultural Status

 

Patriarchal and joint families are found in the Sahariya tribe. Whose family unit is called Kutamba.

The head of their Panchayat is called Patel and the other members are Kotwar, Chopa, Barai, Adhanaria.

Cultural Status

 

Many songs, stories, riddles, proverbs are prevalent in the Sahariya tribe, in which the most narrative riddles are spoken.

In this tribe, Gathlila, Ramjanma, Janaki marriage, story of Pandavas, Gari, Ramayana, Khayal, Languria, Phagat Siya, Bajnageet are sung.

Medium height and dark complexion.

Accommodation

 

They live on flat plains in adjoining houses, which are called Saharana.

A community hall or dharamsala named Bagla is constructed between the houses.

Clothing And Jewellery

 

Men wear dhoti, shirt and safa and women wear lehenga, ghagra, tugda petya etc. and get tattooed.

Jewellery is loved by both men and women.

6.    

Economic Activities

Agriculture, labour, collection of forest produce, animal husbandry, fishing, etc., making medicines from herbs.

Dance

The people of Sahariya tribe mainly dance Lahki, Nritragini, Dul-Dul Ghodi and Tejaji dance.

Religious Status

 

The Sahariya tribe worships Hindu deities.

Their main deities are Sita, Durga and Bhairav.

They celebrate festivals like Dussehra, Deepawali, Holi, Rakshabandhan, Navratri, Makar Sankranti etc.

They believe in soul and tantra-mantra.

 

BAIGA TRIBE

The Baiga tribe found in Madhya Pradesh is one of the three backward tribes declared by the Government of India, which mainly resides in the districts of Mandla, Dindori, Shahdol, Balaghat Seoni etc.

It is a tribe of the Dravidian community, which represents the Proto-Australoid genus.

The Baiga tribe is a sub-branch of the Bhumia tribe.

The literal meaning of the word Baiga is priest. That's why they are also called Pandas.

Apart from being a village priest, Baiga is also a doctor.

The developed form of this tribe is called Bijhawar.

The population of Baiga tribe is 4.15 lakh which is 2.71 percent of the total scheduled tribe population of the state.

Verrier Alvin has written a book on the Baiga tribe called The Baiga.

Sub-Tribe

 

The main sub-castes of Baiga tribe are Narotia, Bharotia, Bijwar, Raimaina, Kathamena, Nahar etc.

Social And Cultural Status

 

There is a Panchayatan system in Baiga tribe, in which there are five types of Panch-Mukadam, Diwan, Samarth, Kotwar and Dwar.

The Muqqdam is their head.

The village of this tribe is called Poorva, the person protecting it is called Kotwar and the person doing the work of priest is called Bewat.

The system of patriarchal and joint family is found in this tribe.

Marriage

 

Same-gotra marriage is prohibited in the villages.

Among them, the marriage of maternal grandmother and grandmother and grandson is also recognized, there is a trend of bride value in them.

Among these, Mangani or Chad marriage, Uthana marriage, Chor marriage, Paitul marriage, Lamsena marriage, Udhariya marriage practices are prevalent.

Meal

Meat (especially of pig), coarse grains, fruits and tubers, their morning meal is called stale, lunch page and evening meal is called biari.

Accommodation

 

Houses with walls made of bamboo which are coated with clay.

The door of the house is very small.

Clothing And Jewellery

 

Men wear loincloth, turban and bracelets in their hands.

Women wear small dhoti called Kapchi and get tattooed all over the body.

There is a special attraction towards jewellery.

8.    

Economic Activities

 

Their main occupation is agriculture.

They mainly do shifting cultivation. Which are called Pondu, Bevar and Dahiya.

Ploughing is prohibited in them and the axe is their main tool.

Dance

 

The main dances of Baiga tribe are Reena, Karma, Pardhoni, Sua, Saila, Dussehra and Dadaria.

Religious Status

·       The Baiga believe in the existence of the soul.

·       Their main deity is Budhadev.

·       These people worship the Dulha Dev for protection from diseases and Thakur Dev for the land of the village.

·       Their adorable tree is the Saaj.

 

 

 

BHARIA TRIBE

The real meaning of the word Bharia is lack of knowledge.

This tribe used to carry the load, hence they were called Bharia.

They are also known by the name Bhumiya.

It is the most backward tribe of Madhya Pradesh, which resides in Chhindwara, Seoni and Mandla districts.

This tribe speaks Bharanoti dialect.

A small group of Bharia tribe has been residing for centuries at a place called Patalkot in Chhindwara district.

The literal meaning of Patalkot is the mountain or fort that surrounds Hades.

In the 1981 census, the Bharia tribe in Patalkot was called the wild of the wild.

Bharia considers Gondo as his forefather or elder brother.

This tribe considers its ancestor King Karnadev.

The head of Bhariya Samaj is called Patel and the other prominent members are Bhumala, Padihar and Kotyar.

Marriage

 

In Bharia tribe, endogamous marriage is prohibited.

In these marriages between the sons and daughters of maternal uncle and aunt are given priority.

The bangle system is also prevalent among them.

In addition, Mangani marriage, Lamsena Viva Yes, Raji 'Baji marriage, Widow marriage are also prevalent.

Black complexion, black and small eyes, broad nose, small teeth, thin lips, medium stature and slim body.

Accommodation

The group of their houses is called Dhana.

Their houses are arranged in two rows.

The walls of the houses are made of mud, bamboo and wood and the roof is made of thatch.

Meat, Mahua, Kodo, Kutki etc.

6.    

Clothing And Jewellery

Men wear dhoti kurta and turban. Whereas women wear green, red colored sindri sarees and wear light metal jewellery.

Economic Activities

 

Their main occupation is agriculture, in which Dahiya farming (similar to Jhum farming) is prevalent.

Hunting, collection of forest produce (mainly herbs) and labor.

They are also skilled craftsmen.

Dance

Saitam, Bhetam, Karma, Saila, Bhadam, Ahirai (Viraha) dances are performed by Bharia tribe.

There is also a youth house, which is called Rang-Bang.

10.         

Religious Status

 

Festivals - Bidri Puja, Navakhani, Diwali, Jatra etc. are celebrated.

The deities are - Dulhadev, Budhadev, Thakurdev etc.
